Historical accounts of the American Civil War rarely document the suffering of the Cherokee people during the conflict. Both the Cherokee nations in Oklahoma and in North Carolina were devastated as a result of a war in which they tried to remain neutral. Their involvement in the war led to the massive destruction of Cherokee farms and businesses, plus the deaths of tens of thousands of Cherokees, leaving a multitude of widows and orphans.
